Foreign Object Damage (FOD) aviation

Foreign Object Damage is any damage attributed to a foreign object that can be expressed in physical or economic terms that may or may not degrade the product's required safety and/or performance characteristics.

Foreign Object Damage (FOD) usually happens when objects are ingested into jet engines powering military or civil aircraft. Under extreme conditions, FOD can lead to severe structural damage. More commonly it produces local impacted sites of the fan and compressor airfoils, lowering fatigue life of these components. FOD is a prime cause for maintenance and repair in aircraft engines.

There are many types of foreign object damage and these are 5 of them:
1-birds strikes, 2-tools on floor, 3-dust, 4-snow storm, 5-insects.

1-Birds strikes are most of the FOD that occur, they happen when the airplane take off and a group of birds flying in the other directions which will increase the momentum between them and make the strike so hard which will cause damage to the airplane and it might make the airplane crash.

2-The tools that have been forgotten by the maintenance engineers could cause a serious FOD, which will be sucked in the engine when it is turned on, this will cause the engine blades to break, or may cause the engine to explode.

3-Dust can cause a serious FOD on the ground and in the air. In the ground it can get in the engines and damage its parts, In the air it can damage the engines and it can block the vision of the pilots and the co-pilots and cause them to crash.

4-Snow storms and blizzards can cause the airplanes to have a huge FOD, which will increase the weight of the aircraft, freeze most of it parts, and might destroy the engines.

5-Insects FOD mostly occur when the aircraft is at the workshops, if the engineers didn’t block the engines by intake screens, insects may enter the engine and have nests in the engine and destroy it.

To prevent FOD there are some methods

Clean the immediate area when work cannot continue.

Clean the immediate area when work debris has the potential to migrate to an out of sight or inaccessible area and cause damage and/or give the appearance of poor workmanship.

Clean the immediate area after work is completed and prior to inspection.

Clean at the end of each shift.

If you drop something or hear something drop - pick it up!
